Having your motorcycle stolen is frustrating, scary, and a major inconvenience—especially in Malaysia, where bikes are not just transport, but a lifeline for work, food delivery, or family errands.

Whether it was a Honda EX5, Yamaha Y15ZR, or Modenas Kriss—you’re not alone. Motorcycle theft in Malaysia is still common, especially in city areas like Klang Valley, Johor Bahru, and Penang.

So... your motorcycle got stolen. What now? Here’s a step-by-step guide on what to do right now—plus how to avoid being in the same situation again.

🔎 1. Stay Calm & Confirm It's Really Gone

Before panicking, double-check:

  • Did someone borrow your bike?

  • Are you parked in a different area than usual?

  • Was your bike towed due to illegal parking?

Once you’re sure it’s not just a misunderstanding—move to the next step quickly.

🚔 2. Make a Police Report ASAP

Time is critical. Head to the nearest police station and file a report immediately.

Here’s what you’ll need:

  • Your IC & driving license

  • Motorbike registration card (geran)

  • Insurance policy documents (if available)

  • A clear description of your bike (model, plate number, color, any unique stickers or mods)

💡 Pro tip: Bring along a recent photo of your bike to help with identification.

📱 3. Notify Your Insurance Provider

If your insurance plan includes Theft or Comprehensive coverage, contact your insurer right after the police report. They'll guide you through the claims process.

What to prepare:

  • A copy of the police report

  • Policy number & details

  • Purchase receipt (if available)

⏳ Most insurers have a claim window (e.g. 7–14 days after theft), so don’t delay.

IMPORTANT: If you only have Third Party insurance (compulsory minimum), you won’t be covered for theft losses.

🧾 4. Inform JPJ (Road Transport Department)

You may need to inform JPJ about the theft to:

  • Avoid future summons or legal issues

  • Cancel road tax or transfer ownership if the bike is found

Bring your police report and IC to the nearest JPJ office.

👀 5. Check Online Platforms – You’d Be Surprised

Many stolen bikes end up on online marketplaces like:

  • Mudah.my

  • Facebook Marketplace

  • Carousell

Search for your bike’s model + plate number or identifying features. If you spot it, DO NOT try to retrieve it yourself—alert the police.

🔐 6. What to Do Next Time – Don’t Ride Unprotected

Losing a bike is not just emotionally painful—it’s expensive. Worse if you’re still paying off the loan!

Next time, protect yourself better:

Use extra security: Disc locks, chain locks, alarms Park smarter: Well-lit, CCTV-covered locations Get insured properly: Make sure your motorcycle insurance covers theft (Pssst..! It's Comprehensive Motorcycle Insurance)

🛡️ Don’t Just Ride – Ride Protected

Most Malaysians only buy Third Party insurance because it’s the cheapest. But that’s like riding with zero protection for your own loss. You will have to pay for all the costs of your stolen or damaged motorcycle—unless you have the right insurance.
