What it actually costs to keep a car on the road in Malaysia

JAGA YOUR CAR · 3 SEPTEMBER – 31 OCTOBER 2026

Nobody warns you about the RM199 service, the RM600 tint, or the battery that dies on the worst possible morning.

We added it all up — then took RM220 off it.

TUNE PROTECT MALAYSIA · 7 MIN READ · MOTOR

Buying the car is the part everyone plans for. You compare loans, you argue about the colour, you take the photo in the showroom. Fine.

What nobody hands you on collection day is the running total for everything after — the servicing, the tint that starts bubbling in year three, the dashcam you keep meaning to install, and the battery that will absolutely, definitely choose the morning of something important.

So let's do the thing nobody does and actually add it up. Real Malaysian prices, 2026. Then we'll show you how to knock RM220 off it.

THE MATHS

Four bills every Malaysian car owner meets

None of these are emergencies. They're just the cost of the car continuing to be a car. Here's the realistic range for each:

WHAT

TYPICAL MALAYSIAN PRICE

HOW OFTEN

Engine oil service

From RM174 for an entry oil package to RM229 full premium on ServAuto. RM150–400 market-wide depending on oil grade and engine size

Every 5,000–10,000 km

Window tinting

RM129–569 nano-ceramic. RM379–800+ sputter. Premium sputter higher again

Once every 5–8 years

Dashcam + installation

Unit and fitting, varies by model and channel count

Once, then forget about it

Battery replacement (12V)

RM150–300 mainstream MF, installed. RM400–650 AGM or EFB for European and start-stop cars

Every 2–4 years

Prices are indicative market ranges as at August 2026 and vary by vehicle, brand and workshop. ServAuto package pricing shown as listed on servauto.com.my.

Add a couple of services a year, a set of tyres you didn't budget for, and the odd wiper blade, and you're looking at roughly RM1,500 a year just keeping a mid-range car healthy. Before insurance. Before petrol. Before tolls.

You pay for insurance every year and — if you're lucky — you never use it. Meanwhile you're paying for the car itself every few months, and nobody's ever given you a sen back for that.

HERE'S THE THING

Most drivers never claim. So what's the policy actually doing?

Industry data puts private car claim frequency at just over 7%. Flip that around: more than nine in ten Malaysian drivers pay a full year of premium and never claim on it.

That's a good year. Nobody wants the alternative. But it does mean that for most people, most years, motor insurance is a PDF sitting in an email you never open — while the car quietly racks up service bills you pay out of pocket.

We kept coming back to that gap. Insurance protects the car you might crash. Nothing was protecting the car you actually drive, every day, to work and back and balik kampung and to the pasar malam where parking is a competitive sport.

So we built something for the in-between years.

INTRODUCING

Jaga Your Car — RM220 in Car Care Pack vouchers

From 3 September to 31 October 2026, buy or renew a Motor Easy policy online, and we'll hand you a set of vouchers for the four things your car actually needs. Not a lucky draw. Not "stand a chance to win." Every eligible customer gets theirs, guaranteed, in the confirmation email.

We've partnered with two names Malaysian drivers already know — ServAuto for servicing, tinting and dashcams, and Bateriku for batteries.

THE PRACTICAL BIT

How to actually use them

This is where most voucher campaigns fall apart, so we've written out both journeys properly. Your codes arrive by email the moment your policy is issued — keep that email, because you'll want it weeks later when the service light comes on.

ServAuto — service, tint, dashcam

Same flow for all three vouchers. Around five minutes, all online. ServAuto

ServAuto

Service · Tint · Dashcam — redeemable on the ServAuto website only

STEP 1

Go to ServAuto and pick what you need — Maintenance, Tinting Film, or Dashcams from the top menu. These vouchers work on the website only, not by walking into a workshop.

STEP 2

Submit your car details. Brand, model, year, variant, engine and mileage, so the site recommends the right package rather than guessing.

STEP 3

Choose your workshop and appointment time from their workshop network.

STEP 4

At the order summary, find the Voucher row and click through to Redeem Voucher.

STEP 5

Paste your code, hit Apply, then Confirm. Check the discount has come off your total before you pay — it can't be applied afterwards.

STEP 6

Complete the purchase and turn up on the day. Each code works once, and can't be combined with other ServAuto promotions.

Bateriku — battery

Slightly different — you give the code to a person, not a checkout box.

Bateriku

Battery — online, in the app, or at a Bateriku Pitstop

STEP 1

Order through the Bateriku app, at bateriku.com, or head to your nearest Bateriku Pitstop.

STEP 2

Key the promo code in at checkout. If an operator rings you to confirm the order instead, tell them the code on the call. At a Pitstop, tell the counter officer before they ring it up.

STEP 3

Make sure the discount shows before you pay. If the code wasn't applied and payment goes through, it can't be refunded or reissued.

STEP 4

A BHero technician is dispatched to you, or fits it at the Pitstop.

STEP 5

They inspect your current battery and install the new one. The code covers eligible ASTRA battery models.

STEP 6

Pay the discounted price. The RM40 is RM20 off the battery plus RM20 for your old one as scrap trade-in, so hand the old battery over at the same time. One redemption per vehicle plate number.

FOUR THINGS WORTH KNOWING

Check the discount before you pay

This is the one that actually costs people money. If the code wasn't applied and you complete payment, neither partner will refund it afterwards. Look at the total.

One code per transaction

If you've got all four, that's four separate bookings — you can't stack them into one order, and they can't be combined with other partner promotions.

Do the battery one before you need it

It's the only voucher tied to a problem rather than a treat. Booking it the week before a long drive beats booking it from a car park at 11pm.

Star the email

Seriously. The number one reason people don't redeem is that they can't find the code months later.

STILL THE MAIN EVENT

The vouchers are the nice part. This is the part that matters.

We'd rather you never need any of this. But a car care voucher is not why you buy insurance, so here's what your Motor Easy policy is doing in the background the whole time:

WHAT MOTOR EASY COVERS

QUESTIONS

Frequently asked

Do I have to do anything to get the vouchers?

No. Buy or renew a Motor Easy policy online between 3 September and 31 October 2026 and your codes arrive in your policy confirmation email automatically. There's no form, no draw, no waiting for a winners' list.

On the three ServAuto vouchers, yes. The RM30 service voucher needs a minimum spend of RM150, the RM50 dashcam voucher RM200, and the RM100 tint voucher RM400 — each on an eligible product on the ServAuto website. The Bateriku battery voucher has no minimum spend, but applies only to eligible ASTRA battery models.

It's two parts, not one discount. RM20 comes off the price of the new battery, and RM20 is credited for your old battery as scrap trade-in value. So you only see the full RM40 if you hand the old battery over at the same time — which you'd normally be doing anyway. It covers eligible ASTRA battery models, and can be redeemed once per vehicle plate number.

Stop before you pay. Both partners are clear that if the code wasn't applied and payment is completed, the discount can't be refunded or reissued afterwards. If it isn't showing, contact the partner first — ServAuto through their website, or Bateriku on 011-1600 6008 or customersupport@bateriku.com.

No — and we'd rather be straight about that. RM220 is the combined face value of four separate vouchers, each redeemed on its own transaction, each with its own minimum spend or eligibility rule set by ServAuto or Bateriku. It isn't cash, it isn't transferable, and it can't be swapped for a premium refund. What it does mean is up to RM220 less out of your pocket across four things you were going to pay for anyway.

One code per transaction. So the four vouchers become up to four separate bookings — three on the ServAuto website and one with Bateriku. They also can't be stacked with other ServAuto or Bateriku promotions running at the time.

The pack scales with the cover. TPFT customers get the two reliability vouchers — service and battery — which are the two jobs every car on the road needs regardless of what it's insured for. If you'd like the full pack next time, comprehensive cover is an option at renewal.

It covers the conventional 12V battery, not the traction battery that drives the car. EVs still have a 12V battery, it still runs the electronics, and it still fails — usually with no warning. The voucher applies to that one, provided your car takes an eligible ASTRA model. Check with Bateriku on 011-1600 6008 before you book.

The vouchers run into 2027 — check the expiry date printed on your own voucher and in your confirmation email, and set a reminder. Unredeemed codes are forfeited once they lapse and can't be exchanged for cash.

Anything about a redemption, a booking, a workshop slot or the workmanship goes to ServAuto or Bateriku directly — they're the ones fulfilling it. Bateriku's customer service is 011-1600 6008 or customersupport@bateriku.com. Anything about your policy, a claim, or your cover comes to us.

Jaga your car. We'll jaga the rest.
